A few simple checks
Before you call for AC service.
Check the breakers.
Look for a tripped AC or indoor-unit breaker without removing covers. If one is tripped, leave the system off and call. Never repeatedly reset it.
Check the return air filter.
A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow. Turn the system off and replace a safely accessible homeowner-serviceable filter using the specified size and type.
Restart after a power interruption.
If power is stable and there are no signs of a fault, set the thermostat to OFF for about five minutes, then COOL. Allow the built-in restart delay. Try this once.
Look for ice.
Ice on visible outdoor refrigerant lines calls for cooling OFF. A dirty filter or refrigerant problem may be involved. See the full guide for fan-only thawing and when to call.
Check the emergency drain.
Intermittent cooling and a dripping emergency drain may indicate a drainage problem activating a float switch. Turn cooling OFF and call. Never bypass the switch.
Still not cooling? Discuss AC repair or call (281) 933-8080. Do not attempt electrical or refrigerant repairs, bypass safety switches or repeatedly reset breakers. Keep clear of standing water near electrical equipment.
Repair first. Explain the options.
A warm house doesn’t
automatically mean
a new system.
A symptom isn’t a diagnosis. The right decision considers the fault, the condition of your equipment, the available repair options and your priorities.
When replacement is worth discussing, ask what supports the recommendation and exactly what the proposal includes.
